finding a host in a LAN

Hello...
I've got two Linux machines plugged into my school's LAN, connected using DHCP: their IP addresses are randomly assigned.
I'd like to be able to let them automagically find each other's IP.
What's the best/easiest way to do this?

Thanks!

ping the broadcast and verify that the arp is correct for the remote machine.
