File Transfer Problems Using a Dial-Up Router

I hope someone can help me with this. I recently bought a D-LINK DI-704 Cable/DSL Router to network my computers at home and to share internet access. Because, I can't get DSL I have the router connect to the internet via dial up access (by connecting my external modem to the router). My problem is when I try to transfer files via scp or when I try to ssh to a site the connection is so slow. Its so slow that my file transfers timeout. This only happens when I'm in Linux (Mandrake 8.1). When I try using windows98 via pscp or putty I can connect and transfer files just fine with no problems. Its just a pain to switch to windows just to transfer files or use ssh. Do I need to configure something in Linux to speed up the connection. Sorry for the length of this message. Thank you very much for all the help.

Best Regards,
Hopya
