File sharing: username and password setup

I've been trying to set up file sharing on this computer so that Win98 clients can access certain files and folders. I've set up a few public shares, but I'm having a terrible time setting up restrictive access. When I try to set up a specific set of users (names and passwords based upon their Windows network logins) using the "valid users =" option in smb.conf, the share become inaccessible to everyone, even for the user who is supposed to have access. Can anyone point me to a good manual on setting this up? Or tell me what I might be missing?

Something to try if your out...

make sure the user owns the directory. and has full access..
use public = no, writable = yes and add any valid users.in the smb.conf. That should work..

It's not working...

All that is set up, and it still isn't working. Whenever I try to connect on the Win98 machine through Network Neighborhood, I get this message:

"You must supply a password to make this connection:

Resource: \\*servername*\*sharedfoldername*"

It give me a text box to enter the password. I enter the correct password for the username I used to log into Windows, and I get a message that the password is incorrect. I am genuinely stuck here.
