File-Sharing 2 Suse-boxes.

I have 2 Suse 9.0 computers set up, they are hooked to a Linksys, EtherFast cable/dsl router. The router says it not only shares the internet connection, but allows computes connected to be networked and share files and printers...

I've used yast to set up a samba server on the desktop, and a client on the laptop, and have even defined folders and a printer to be shared. However, whenever i try to browse the network from either computer, it says no workgroups are found. The workgroup name is present when setting up the connection, but nothing is found when I try to use it.

Help!!!

Is there some better way to do this?

If you're doing *nix to *nix file sharing on a private network then NFS is going to be your easiest option for sure if you're at all comfortable with a text editor.

Here's a little tutorial a friend of mine wrote for setting up NFS:
http://lug.nibble.bz/viewtopic.php?t=48

His example shares the /home directory but that is completely arbitrary. You can share any directory on your file system. Also his example is in Redhat but hopefully that gives you enough info to do it in SuSe.

ps Please forgive shameful the plug. We just started a few things on our own site because we didn't know about these wonderful forums and I don't want to re-type his article.

/me looks at the reference to a text editor... shudders.

Lol..

Well, thanks for the info. I had file sharing up and running with an 8gb transfer in under 25 seconds.
I have suse, so, don't need text editors to configure anything.

Clicked on NFS. Clicked, Start Server, Add folder... done.
Second computer, same.
Then clicked, "NFS Client", add folder...
second computer same.
Done

And whamo.. 8gb of files heading for backup on a second hard drive
