File Permissions with Apache

First of all I'm a total noob [only been running Linux for a couple of days] and I'm running a webserver off my home PC [apache]. I thought everything was running fine until I tried to have a comment system [shoutbox] implemented. Here is problem;

I'm trying to have a Comment system on my site, but whenever I go to post it just reloads page [at least i think that is what it is doing] It won't write to the 'comment.dat' file. After looking at some of the log files, I found out it has something to do with Permissions. So then I changed the permissions [about every way i could think of] and it still doesn't work.

My web directory [along with the files] is set to;
  • owner = me
    group = Apache
I have only change the permissions on the 'comment.php' and 'comment.dat' files. Any combonation hasn't worked.

Anyway, this is driving me nuts. I have searched for like 3 hours trying to get this figured out, but no success. So if anyone can help out, it would be great. Thank You.....

Here is a link to an example of the problem. Well since this is my first post I guess I can't post a link...........but incase you need to see the example it can be found here......... 'boxdesigns.net/commentsystem/example.php'

Welcome to LQ.

Have you given apache write access to the files as well?

Can you post the output from:
ls -l comment.dat

That should be ok. Does the script fail to open the file as well as write to it?

Yep excatly................. At first I tried to write my own script [trying to learn PHP] and I thought I messed up somewhere. So I got a couple a scripts and the same thing happened with all of them. It seems that I can display PHP just not execute any.
