Fedoar Core 5 Installed, How do I get my internet up?
 

I read the other forum question that was nearly identical to this one, and drew a blank. I suppose I know even less about what I'm doing that that guy. Anyway, I'm running Fedora Core 5, and my internet is an ethernet cable from a DSL modem. I can connect to the fedora site bookmark sites, but for some reason I can't get on anything else. I tried google, yahoo, myspace, none of them worked. I went in to Network under administrator stuff and turned on my ethernet, but that didn't do it. That allowed me to access the Fedora bookmarks already in Firefox, but nothing else. Thanks for the help, if anybody offers it.

Hi Nathan.

What do you get when you click on System > Administration > Network ?

Do you only have your ethernet card to activate? If your answer is yes, you need to click on 'New' and select 'xDSL connection' , then you'll fill the blank cases and bingo! You have a new xDSL device that you can activate and you should access the internet.

Thanks I will try that soon. I actually have had some disastrous problems with my computer since that message, but when I get Fedora up and running again, I will try that. Thanks for the help!

Ok I got everything back up and running. I have no idea what to put for username and password though, in the activation of an xDSL connection. I have never had to log into my DSL before, using Windows. So...the ony thing active under my Network thing is eth0, my ethernet connection, I guess. My DSL is routed through an external modem and gets to my computer in the form of an ethernet cable, which is why I'm a little confused as to why it doesn't work. Anyway, if you care to offer any more help, I'd appreciate it.

Ok. First of all, who is your internet service provider?

For example, in my case it's Bell Sympatico. They provided me with a user's name (login name) and a password for my internet account. That's what you need when you configure a DSL connection.

Because you can access the Red Hat site, it's clear that your DSL modem is correctly set up and running, so you have no need to get your DSL access username and password. They're already stored in the modem's memory, and correctly connecting you to the ISP.

The Red Hat access that worked for you uses a numeric URL, so no DNS lookup is needed to resolve the name.

It sounds to me more like you need to set your DNS values in system-config-network. <Edit>(Run system-config-network, select your connection (probably eth0, then select Edit. One of the tabs should let you set the DNS and Gateway values when you de-select the DHCP automatic setup choice.)</Edit>

If your Windows system is working, and you have the "network" icon displayed, right-click on it, select "status," then the "Support" tab, then "Details." Your various network address (e.g., Gateway and DNS) should be listed there.

For some reason that I've yet to figure out, FC5 does not seem to be able to set these values using the DHCP system. It should be automatic, but it doesn't seem to work. This is a great problem using FC5 on a portable computer, since it results in the system finding the access point, activating the connection, but being unable to establish the connection. (Which is why Im using XP in my hotel room right now . . .)

Anyhow, I suspect your problem is related to this one, but -- since you're hard-wired -- just setting the correct values should get you up and running.

You're probably right PTrenholme.

Although about the site Nathan says he can connect to, I wonder if it really is a web site or this page:

If it's the latter, you don't need a functionning connection to make it appear and in that case that would indicate that his connection is not working.
