FC11 - DNS stopped working by itself

Hi guys

I switched my FC11 system off yesterday. Turning it on this morning, NO domain names can be resolved anymore.

I can ping IP adresses directly, and even get to them in FireFox if I type the IP address. However, typing any domain name at all fails. I cannot ping or SSH to any domain name, but as soon as I enter an IP, it works. I can ping the DNS server by IP that is set in my /etc/resolv.conf

I checked on an XP system using the same DNS server set in /etc/resolv.conf (which can also be pinged on IP from my FC11 system), on the same connection from the same ISP, and it works.

E. g. without touching anything at all (and all updates are turned off) my FC11 system has stopped resolving domain names.

I'm running 32bit FC11. The system has been working fine for more than 2 years.

So it has spontaneously stopped doing DNS when I enter a domain name. Where can I start looking?

Thanks

For some reason this fixed itself, or it somehow was the DNS server...

Here's my resolv.conf when I had the problem:

[qoute]
timeout 0
nameserver 196.7.150.34
nameserver 196.25.1.11
nameserver 196.7.147.235
nameserver 196.25.255.3
nameserver 196.25.255.34
nameserver 168.210.2.2
nameserver 196.7.0.138
nameserver 196.43.3.13
I could ping 196.7.150.34 just fine, as I could 196.25.1.11

I then, in desperation, did this:

[qoute]
timeout 0
nameserver 196.25.1.11
nameserver 196.7.150.34
nameserver 196.7.147.235
nameserver 196.25.255.3
nameserver 196.25.255.34
nameserver 168.210.2.2
nameserver 196.7.0.138
nameserver 196.43.3.13
e. g. I swapped the first tow entries... and domain name resolution started working again.

Apparently the 196.7.150.34 DNS server stopped working, or is not offering DNS services anymore. This is a privately hosted DNS server controlled by Hetzner South Africa.

Well at least DNS on my FC11 is functional again.
