extremail

Howdy, I am new here and this seems to be a great place to get help. I am trying out different email server solutions for a project and I tried extremail based on recommendations found here. Now I am probably doing something really dumb, but I cannot start the smtpd server. I cd into the /home/eXtremail/bin directory and type in smtpd start according to the directions and nothing happens. Anyone?

When you say 'nothing happens'.. Exactly what doesn' t happen?

D'you get a 'command not found', or 'failed to start' or *something* back?

Here's a quick stab in the thorax...

smtp start will try to run an 'smtp' command foung on YOUR PATH. Not in the current directory. If your executable is contained in /home/mailthingy/bin/smtp and you're *in* that directory, and that directory isn't in your path, you'll need to qualify the name with a ./

./ = this directory

so urm.. try :

cd /home/eXtremail/bin
./smtp start

did you know you have a capital X in there?

Slick.

aaah, yes, you are quite correct! As well, I should have specifically given the result, which was exactly as you suggested. Your stab to the thorax was right on the money. While I have administered some basic Linux services (DHCP, APACHE, PROFTPD) I have hesitated to implement some of the more advanced setups like mail and DNS services until now. Thank you for correcting my poor command line skills!
