External modem in Ubuntu

I have bought an external modem to use in linux (ubuntu 8.04). There is no problem in connecting and authenticating, but after it connect, I can't work with internet. Firefox and other applications works as if linux doesn't connect. Also the network computers (near the clock and calendar) doesn't show the connection.
Also I have changed the proxy method in firefox, but still doesn't work. What's the problem?

What software are you using to dial your ISP, wvdial, gnome-ppp, or kppp?

As a test start FireFox and try these URLs:

164.214.2.59
www.nima.mil

These are actually the same location. Can you access the site by either address?

First I used KPPP. The problem was while authenticating. Changing to new line method to both CR and LF fixed the problem. But still I couldn't see the internet.
Then I tried to use the point-to-point connection from Network connection (maybe the gnome-ppp as you said), but after connecting, also the check box would checked, but it seemed I am not connected to internet at all.

OK. I will check the IP address and domain name.
