Extending the range of ethernet

I am wanting to increase the range of the ethernet for the standard 100m or so too a range of about 300m. Does anyone have any ideas? It does matters if the data is convert to to any other protocol and then back again. It just needs to be cheap and transparent to the system.

Use a pair of fiber converters and run Fiber for the long distance run.
Insert a couple switches at 100m Intervals.

The switches every 100M would be the cheapest,

Assuming one can run an extension cord of some kind to each switch.
google for ethernet extenders.

Based on what I've learned recently in Cisco courses I would go the switch/hub way. One at each 100m to amplify and repeat the signal.

If there is a clear line of site You could use 2 wifi routers with special antenna and firmware and according to the information below 3,2 km is possible.

We actually pulled off 10 Miles with 2 stock Cisco Aironet 340's and the proper antenna's.. backup link between sites. In no way compared to the speed of the Gig Fiber between the locations but it was better than nothing if the fiber got cut...
