What kind of internet provider do you use?

Post here the output of

ifconfig

so we can have a look at it.

Ethernet Problemos

Well my internet and netowrk is VERy confusing.. i have 4 computers in my house. I get cable from optusnet 512k into my router which splits into 3 cables which the 2 go to 2 computers and one goes to a Network Hub. The network hub then goes to My knoppix 3.6 pc (which will soon be a webserver) and my windows xp computer...I have to many computers!

Heres that Ifconfig thing you wanted

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:61 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:61 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:4230 (4.1 KiB) TX bytes:4230 (4.1 KiB)

You only have the Io interface up. Try to bring up the eth0 interface also, needed for connection.
In Debian I do:

ifconfig eth0 up

and that's it.

After that, do ifconfig again and check if you can see eth0 and its values.

Post again if you don't get a connection after that.

have you tried some of these?

this sounds like a hardware configuration error/resource conflict. we need to know your exact nic model. if you are uncertain, post back the output of:

dmesg | grep eth

once you know this information, go to http://www.scyld.com/community.html (link edited) and find out what module is supposed to load with your card.

once you know the name of the card and its driver, find out if the driver had loaded:

lsmod | grep your_module_name_here

if your module is loaded, let us know if your card shows up in:

cat /proc/lspci

ifconfig -a

if your module is not loaded, try

insmod your_module_name_here
or
modprobe your_module_name_here

This link you posted is an error 404. Could you please locate the document and post again? I wanted to see this too.

Talking It works!

Ahh, it works..what i found was that knopix when you run it from your harddrive it dosent auto configure devices at boot. so..what i did was i booted from the CD and i formated my HD and then re-installed knoppix. So a note if you are going to install knoppix make sure you have all the hardware PLUGGED IN before booting from the CD
