Ethernet cable (un)plugged status

I found that my friend using windows could easily know if the network cable is plugged in the ethernet port or not by simple notificaions from the taskbar. However, I use GNU/Linux and I need to physically check if the cable is in place.

How should I know the network cable status from the monitor itself.
I would also prefer if I am able to log the information when the cable was plugged/unplugged .

NetworkManager is installed by default on some desktop oriented distributions (like Fedora). It does what you want, and much more.
