eth0 works on 2.4 kernel, not in 2.6

Hi

I have an old laptop Toshiba Tecra 8000 (P233, 64MB ram). It has an dockingstation, and there is an ethernet card.
Using Debian Etch (4.0) with a 2.4 kernel, internet works fine.
when I boot the 2.6 kernel (I use an old 2.6.8-2, the stable sarge kernel), the ethernet card does not work. I think DHCP tries to resolve dns or ip address, but does not sucseed.
googling on some forums I found tips regarding ifupdown. well, that works on the 2.4 kernel, but not on the 2.6:
the same 'network unreachable' error returns after a minute probing ... (bad foor bootup time...)

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you know how the network card is managed versus 2.4 to 2.6?

What I mean is that the 2.4 kernel might have the driver available for the network card, while the 2.6 kernel does not - which might explain why you can't get it working in the 2.6 kernel.

What I mean is that the network card needs a driver to work. When your 2.4 kernel was compiled, the people who did it included a driver for your particular network card. When the 2.6 kernel was compiled, the people who did THAT might not have included support (in module or integrated form) for your network card....

To solve this you'll of course first need to determine WHAT network card you have, and then there are various steps you can take to try and see if that network card's driver is active in the 2.6 kernel vs. the 2.4 kernel.

Network Dock Port Replicator: Model Toshiba PA2724U
Ethernet connection 10/100BaseT Ethernet (Intel Chipset 82557/8/9) [Ethernet Pro 100]

I use hotplug (I am afraid udev is to new for my old laptop)

I could not find 2.6 drivers for ethernetcards. BTW the name looks so familiar I think its a standard. Please tell me how to look which driver he uses (or should use) in 2.6 kernel
