Hello, I am having a problem with my NIC shutting down or being overloaded. Here are my specs before I explain: kernel 2.6.8-gentoo-r3 running gentoo of course. I have a d-link ethernet card. I believe my problem stems from running xmule and having my upload queue overloading my connection. This was briefly mentioned to me before. What happens is when I run xmule for a while, I will come back to find that my connection to the internet, LAN, etc. is lost. I can't event ping localhost, I get "operation not permitted" messages as ping attempts to ping localhost. I can get back from this temporarily by restarting /etc/init.d/net.eth0 but soon after the problem reoccurs, and this is even after shutting down xmule. What do you suggest? Someone said I should try amule, and keep my upload limits low, but I want credits...Thanks a lot.

There may be something else wrong here, even if your connection to the internet goes down in flames, your computer should still be able to talk to itself with the loopback; it works even when you have no network card.

yea, I was wondering about that...seems odd. Well it only happens when using xmule...don't really know if anyone else has had this problem. Maybe I should try amule and see what happens...thanks though. Any more suggestions?

I would try busting my connection with any other high-bandwidth programs I had. Start as many downloads as you can, stream lots of high-quality videos, music, whatever you can think of that would "overload" your connection and trigger the behaviour that the program you mention is causing. If you can't make it happen without using that program, then you may have found a bug in the program A memory leak, bad network code, lots of things could cause the problem you're having. The easiest sollution would just be to switch to another program, it that fixes it, and nothing else is broken, then I don't see why you couldn't leave it at that.

Hit up the local computer store for the used parts bin. Grab a ethernet card, slap it in. Add modular support for it in the kernel... you get the rest. =)
