eth0 boots slow

When I am booting my computer with Mandrake 9.1 it gets to the part where it says "bringing up interface eth0" and then it just kind of hangs for almost forever. Then it finally says OK and then boots up the rest of the way. The NIC is configured and I can ping the windows machine that is also on the network. I connect to the internet via my windows machine. Is there something I can try to speed up the eth0 interface during startup?

It sounds to me like your system is trying to update the card's ip address via DHCP, if you are directly connected to your gateway and there's no other devices between you and your gateway, then there's no reason not to use static ip addresses, go ahead and try a static ip address and see if that fixes the problem

it happed to me once...im using redhat ..
i just removed the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 or
edit it to place an ip ..if ur part of a network...

Yeah I am using DHCP. If I can figure out how to do it without breaking something I will try setting it static. Some times it takes it about 2 seconds to configure eth0 but most of the time it is really slow.

Just reserve an IP Address for your linux box on the DHCP server and set the linux box to that IP address.
