enabling jumbo large packets

I have Netgear GA311 ethernet card. I am wondering how to enable jumbo packets.

I do:

bash-3.00# ifconfig eth0 mtu 9014
bash: SIOCSIFMTU:: command not found

Am I doing something wrong? I am fairly certain the GA311 is able to do jumbo packets. I know my switch does(Netgear GS108.) It works on dummy0 but not on eth0.

ifconfig -a reveals:

dummy0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr <insert mac address here>
BROADCAST NOARP MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr <insert mac address here>
inet addr:192.168.123.100 Bcast:192.168.123.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:8619055 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:10074826 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:637985053 (608.4 Mb) TX bytes:3123496212 (2978.7 Mb)
Interrupt:12 Base address:0x2000

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:1275 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:1275 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:590925 (577.0 Kb) TX bytes:590925 (577.0 Kb)

If that is of any use to anyone.

The Netgear GA311 apparently has a maximum frame size of 7500.

OK, thanks I can get it to do 7200 mtu. I didn't think to lower the amount. Maybe I'll have to pick another intel card, since it seems it can do 16436 as I have it in my other machine.
