I can't find any answers to this question via google, LQ.org or or other similar search options, so maybe it just can't be done. I figure if it's possible, you people would know.
I'm curious...is it possible to enable "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" via DHCP daemon on linux? Inside Microsoft's IP configuration, it says "use settings from dhcp server". I completely understand this could be a microsoft-only feature, but I wanted to be sure.
Is it possible? How should I modify my dhcpd.conf to make it work?
Yes, NetBIOS is something you find exclusively in a Microsoft world.
The catch is, right now we're running NetBEUI and TCP/IP on our small network. NetBEUI is light, fast and stable, and makes a great backup protocol if TCP/IP is unavailable for some reason (DHCP server fails, etc).
NetBEUI is providing NetBIOS name resolution at the moment. If I removed NetBEUI from the picture, NetBIOS name resolution would fail. I want to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (so that name resolution isn't dependant on NetBEUI), but I'd like to do that via DHCP if I can.
Microsoft disables NetBIOS over TCP/IP by default due to security concerns. We're very isolated (masqueraded) and small, so I don't think it will be a big issue to enable it on all of the computers.
I already have a WINS server in place, and DHCP already sends out the location of the WINS server. But I have found that enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP makes communication a little easier.
Thanks for the help. I'm accepting the fact that it's a Microsoft world (and I won't relinquish DHCP to Windows 2003 to perform).
To determine if NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on a Windows-based computer, issue a net config redirector
or net config server command at a command prompt. The output shows bindings for the NetbiosSmb device (which
is the "NetBIOS-less" transport) and for the NetBT_Tcpip device (which is the NetBIOS over TCP transport).
I've got a feeling this disables not enables but thats the line....
