How do I enable encryption Knoppix 5.1.1

A little O.T., How do I verify that encription is enabled for XP? I am comparing 2 identical laptops, one is Knoppix 5.1.1, the other is running XP. The XP one connects at a particular place, and the Knoppix one does not. Knoppix one is using Netgear MA501. XP one uses Netgear MA521. Both are 802.11b.
