enable/disable network card

How do I enable/disable eth0 so it appear/disappear when I type /ifconfig.

How do I set up an ip address for eth0 on boot. I have to manual set the ip address everytime after boot.

redhat.

Don't have xterm though. So can't use GUI configuration redhat provide.

For setting IP on boot, isn't it just a script some where under /etc.

For enable/disable a network interface, it might have more to do with enable/disable device, I'm not sure.

You always have a console even in Redhat, try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 should take you right to it so you can login as root. You can press alt-F7 to get back to the GUI.

Also xterm isn't the only cli for X, theres also Gterm, Konsole, etc... dpending on what eviroment your in.

Is there anyway to do it without the GUI interface though?

In Red Hat, you can edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (or eth1, or whatever your interface is). Make sure that DHCP is disabled. Also add the gateway permanently by editing /etc/sysconfig/network. Last, edit /etc/resolv.conf with your DNS server info. That will make the settings persistent.
