Easy basic networking question.

Hey all,

could I ask a favor and get a step by step guide to switching linux networking?

Situation is this: (btw im a windows user, Linux is new to me) I put the Tiger OS on a G4 laptop for a friend at uni. Before I handed it over I had used the network wizard to set it to 'no internet, just LAN' and gave it an IP so I could hook it up to my windows pc in order to copy programs, music etc.
Like a twit I forgot to re-set it, so that now she's trying to hook it up to her Uni network it's not playing.
I have no Linux machines here and no knowledge of them, and neither's she.

So could someone please help me finish the job and tell me in computer illiterate terms how to start up the linux equivilent of the network wizard, and which option would be best-guess for a Uni intra-net?
See, I said it was basic :)
Many, many thanks.

well I'm a little confused as tiger (osx) is not linux and you don't mention another computer. linux doesn't have a network wizard though some distros might have a nice point and click config utility for this. a university would most likely be set up with dhcp (the server tells your computer it's ip address and how to connect to the 'net) I'm familiar with both linux and tiger networking but I can't answer your question without more information.

I thought Tiger was a version of Linux, sorry. I know nothing about anything on this side of the fence :)
So yeah it's a tiger osx box, guess im in the wrong place.

Tiger is mac osx it is freebsd/bsd/mach (which is freebsd/bsd based) based. so it is very much like linux but not actualy linux. what you want to do is go into system preferances (the thingy that looks like a light switch) then network. select the network interface (ethernet/airport) and go to tcp/ip settings. as i said the most likely set up is dhcp but check with the schools IT staff if that doesn't work

That's great, thanks.

glad it works for you. you should consider giving linux a try though (unless you find viruses, spyware, adware and the blue screen of death fun) I haven't used windows for almost 4 years. I don't need it for anything anymore. I've got my mom, dad and little brother using it (they all live in different places and I'm the one who had to fix their computers so now I don't have to do that any more. now I just have to show them how to do things with linux.)I bought this powerbook and put tiger and gentoo on it but I find I almost never use tiger. oh and their is no bill gates tax over here.
