im messing around with both knoppix and suse live eval 8.2 trying to learn about linux before i install it. i can not connect to the internet with either of them. i have a linksys nic a speed stream 5630 modem. when i connect in suse i open up the log and it tells me authentification error maybe bad password or username. so i check and everthing is right. i edited my chap-secrets and pap-secrets. and i also get the error could not set mru to 1500. is there anything i should try to get this to work. thank you very much

Some DSL modems now come with a PPPoE client as part of the modem's firmware. Have you checked your modem to see if it's capable of this? This might save you a lot of trouble...
your modem is ethernet right? Then, you only need to make sure your ethernet card is working (if ifconfig eth0 give you something, this is probably good) and then to install a small progs to connnect to pppoe. use rp-pppoe, it is very good (search on google, I don't remember the adress). Put it on a floppy then install it on your linux box.
