Domain Name option during the Debian installation

during the installation of Debian Etch there is a option to choose the domain name. I don't understand it. I have already chosen a host name(a computer name in other words). Or is it so, that the host name is the name of my computer when looked from LAN and domain name is the name of my computer when looked from the internet? Could somebody explain this domain name option?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostname

Basically you set hostname.domainname. So hostname is the name of your machine (which you set). Domains are usually used in larger networks, so your computer at work might be named "alvin" and your work domain might be "chipmunks.com". So your full computer name at work would be alvin.chipmunks.com.

For home networking, you can choose anything you want or just leave it alone and it will default to "localdomain". Just make sure you use the same thing on all the computer on your home network.

what is the advantage of having that kind of domain(or is it just an identity issue?)? I have a laptop(Debian) and a desktop computer(Ubuntu)- are there any advantages having them in the same domain?
