I don't know much about how the Internet and domains work. Anyway, for awhile I have been using the domain xyz.com for ftp and telnet connections into my computer. For some reason it isn't working anymore. My IP hasn't changed and my domain hasn't expired. When I type in my IP, it works, but I'd rather not have to type in a string of numbers. I use to have my domain at EasyHost and now it is at Domain People. (I guess EasyHost got bought.) The settings are all the same. I have my IP listed as the NameServer. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Thanks,
JT

When did all this take place, that is when did EasyHost get bought or taken over by Domain People? Most likely its on their end as they probably haven't setup the actual DNS servers as how EasyHost had, etc.
This is a question I would be asking your host provider as somethings most likely wrong on their end if they're hosting it for you unless your hosting and they are just your registrar for you domain? Do you have your own DNS servers or using another service so your domain registrar knows where to point your domain to; to pick up the correct DNS so then it tells what IP is being hosted at?
More details on your setup or were as clueless as you are.

So you are saying that my domain works? I wonder why I can't get to it from my own network... Could it be something wrong with the main router in my region sf the world? And out of curiosity, was it against the rules to post the actual name of my domain or did you edit my post for my protection? I'm just curious.
Thanks,
JT

He edited it for your protection. I still can't get in but if I use your IP I get to it. I can dig your DNS but yet it just times out. Something is most likely wrong with your DNS, for some strange reason talking to David_Ross, he can get to it but I can't.
Certianly not against the rules I just didn't really think you wanted to advertise your domain while you had telnet running, it was for your own protection.
Even though you have disabled root access through telnet you may at some point use "su". When you enter your password it is set in plain text at all stages of the connection, hence my reccomendation for using ssh.
Do you get a response from a dig:
dig yourdomain.com A
Code:
dig yourdomain.com A
; <<>> DiG 9.2.2-P3 <<>> yourdomain.com A
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 39971

Well thanks for hiding my domain then. Anyway, dig isn't on my system yet. I'll have to figure out what deb it's in later today as I'm off to church. How do I test to see if it my PC's fault or DomainPeople's Fault? I just thought that they enter my IP into some magical router and it didn't have to go through domainpeople first. Like I said, I don't know much about how the Internet works yet.
btw, Windows tracert program says it cannot resolve the name...

After running a few more tests and getting a few more people to try as well it appears that your DNS server is having temporary problems that come and go. My nameservers are probably caching your entries and haven't been updated yet. Has it been an ongoing problem for some time or has it just started?
Hmmm... It now works. I typed in apt-get dns-masq and everything works again... I guess it was just my PC not being configured right. I must have accidently uninstalled something when I went to fix my printer.
