Does this work?

I have a new isp for a couple of months now, but since I got a usb modem with the package I can't use any linux distro anymore (it's the infamous ericsson hm121dp, unsopperted by everybody).

Before I had this USB modem I had an ethernet router (cable), which was connected to my adsl/cable e-tech router. The other pc's were connected as clients to that router and linux recognized everything smoothly.

The new usb modem won't work with this new router, but I had a thought about it today, what if I:

Put the USB modem on another windowsxp machine and connect that pc with a cable to the router internet-in slot. Now I can add the linux pc's as client to the router, can't I?

Like this:
WINXP PC WITH USB MODEM -> ROUTER -> LINUX PC

I have to change a lot of cables to try this, so I'd like to hear your opinions about this. I think it works, in theory, what are your thoughts?

Yes, that should work.

On another note though, did you check to see if a dedicated firewall distro like SmoothWall will work with your modem? I know for a fact they have USB modem support, but I don't know what brands.

Should work this way....

First off, realize that your WinXP system will be hacked in no time and will probably be used to do unspeakable things on the internet. Knowing that, here's how you do it.

Hook up your USB modem to your XP system and get it working.

Enable Internet connection sharing (check XP's help if you don't know how to do that).

Connect using a crossover cable the PC to the router's WAN port.

Configure the WAN port of the router to 192.168.0.2 and set the router's default gateway to 192.168.0.1.

Configure the internal side of your router however you like.

Connect your clients, and you're in business. (Crossover if directly from router to PC, strait-through if going through a switch/hub)

I think this is a VERY bad idea (incase you didn't get that impression from my first paragraph). I would suggest you check with your ISP and see if they have the option of a eathernet modem instead.

Cheers,

Haven't checked that yet MS3FGX, thanks.

@charon79m: the reason for this weird solution is that my isp doesn't do modem-trading/switching. They are probably very glad they lost those bloody usb modems, cuz they are supplying their custumors with other usb-modems now...

Maybe I should save up some money to get another modem, now I hear your security story. Didn't even thought about that, thanks for that.

The security issue isn't really for your internal network... it's what someone could do with your external router (XP machine) that I would worry about. If someone without morals got control of that box they could have the feds at your place in no time.

Best of luck,
