DNS Server problem in Fedora Linux

Hi guys,

OS: Fedora
ServerNS
Problem: Does not recognizes the domain zones I entered.

I am trying to configure the DNS Server on my fedora mashine. It does have a private ip number 192.168.1.25 I am also running a web server on the same mashine. I am trying to confgure myserver.com
I enter the following info on the DNS Config screen

Domain name: myserver.com
file name: (By default) myserver.com.zone
Primary Name Server SOA: localhost
Contact Info: alex.myserver.com

Then in the program I click on Add Record
I add a name server

Host: ( I leave it blank)
name server: localhost

Then I add a host
Host name: ( I leave it blank)
Ip Number: 192.168.1.25

Host name: www
Ip number: 192.168.1.25

and then I save it and quit so the dns server reloads the info. I also stop and restart the dns server form services to make sure it reads the new values.

I noticed DNS server writes these zone files under

/var/named/chroot/var/named folder

When I ping myserver.com from terminal I get an error. It does not recognizes the domain name.

When I do nslookup or host, it still does not recognizes the domain name. This drowe me crazy. Can someone please help me.

Thanks
Alex

I found out that

RH9 saves the DNS files in the following directories
/etc/named.conf
/etc/named.custom
/var/named/ zone files

Fedora saves the DNS files in the following directories for some reason ?
(God knows why? )
/var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf
/var/named/chroot/etc/named.custom
/var/named/chroot/var/named/ zone files

Is it possible that Fedora GUI saves the files in
/var/named/chroot/var/named/ directory but Bind reads the files from
/var/named/ directory and therefore it is not recognizing my zones.

Maybe you should try this caching DNS.

RedHat and Fedora BIND normally runs as the named process owned by the unprivileged named user. In Fedora, BIND is also installed using Linux's chroot feature to not only run named as user named but also to limit the files named can see. When installed, named is fooled into thinking that the directory /var/named/chroot is actually the root or "/" directory. Therefore named files normally found in the /etc directory are found in /var/named/chroot/etc directory instead, and those you'd expect to find in /var/named are actually located in /var/named/chroot/var/named.

Look at the "Important File Locations" part of this page:
