DNS server can't resolve 1 of the server's name

CentOS 6. I'm following another CentOS's ifcfg-eth0 settings. The other one works fine but not this current one. The only differences is the IPADDR.

ifcfg-eth0
Code:
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
HWADDR=00:22:2D:C1:8F:D7
ONBOOT=yes
IPADDR=192.168.1.6
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.1.0
GATEWAY=192.168.1.1
TYPE=Ethernet
Some other config files. Our DNS server is 192.168.1.5
/etc/resolv.conf
Code:
nameserver 192.168.1.5
/etc/sysconfig/network
Code:
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=riffhub
in smb.conf I have
netbios name = riffhub

No matter what I do, I can't ping it's host name (riffhub) but I can ping it's ip address (192.168.1.6)

Trying to access the shared directory from Windows with \\riffhub doesn't work either. But \\192.168.1.6 works.

Any other settings I'm missing? Any help appreciated. Thanks!

I'm guessing that the actual smb.conf has netbios name and not the typo you put above (netbiod)?

Also check /etc/nsswitch.conf

Ah. The netbios is a typo only in that post. The actual smb.conf is correct.

The settings in nsswitch is as follow

Code:
hosts:      files dns

bootparams: nisplus [NOTFOUND=return] files

protocols:  files
rpc:        files
services:   files

netgroup:   nisplus

publickey:  nisplus

automount:  files nisplus
aliases:    files nisplus

I think you're assuming that with static ip settings, that goes automatically to the DNS server that creates an entry, and that's not true. Then, for samba, if *only* you expect DNS to do the job (which is theorically fine), then it won't work, as explained. If you expect netbios name to be used by windows workstations, and not depending on DNS, then you'll need to set a WINS server for the workgroup, and repeat that setting for all the workstations in the workgroup.
