DNS resolution to net randomly not working
I have a machine used as a router gateway, comcast cable service. eth1 is on the inside, eth2 goes to cable modem. After swapping the mobo last night, i'm having issues obtaining an ip address at times from the modem. power cycling the modem does not fix the issue. when I do manage to get an IP, (24.xx.xx.xx, so I know it's right), outside domain names do not resolve. /etc/resolv.conf has the proper search domain/entries. This is often fixed by rebooting literally once or twice. Now when I try to get a DHCP ip address from the modem, sometimes it will just keep sending packets till it gives up, or I might get one, it's iffy. I tried swapping NIC's, both to same result. Please note I CAN get inet. connectivity, but it's just a pain in the @$$. Ubuntu server 6.10. I do have firewall rules setup(iptables) ... could it be the fact I have a DROP rule for _EVERY_ ICMP packet? (This might explain why when the machine is up, if it's broken, reboot). Thanks!
