DNS, Dynamic IP address and and ISP
 

Hi,

If somebody can read through this long question and help me out, I would be grateful.

I have RH 7.2, installed, up and running. I am connected to the internet via DSL. It is all working beautifully.

I want to register a domain name, but host the domain in my pretty Linux box, with web server, email, ftp and all the other goodies. This is where I start having problem, since I do not fully comprehend its implications.

These are things that I think I need

1. A domain name. I can register with any company (not necessarily my ISP). The average price of a domain name registration I have seen is $35/year. Not bad if no hidden charges....

2. I need to run a DNS on my machine. I am ready for this since I read "Nicolai Langfeldt (dns-howto(at)langfeldt.net), Jamie Norrish and others "

The big question is.
Do I need a Dynamic DNS provider, since my IP address is going to be dynamic.? OR I will be okay with points 1 and 2 above?

What else do I need to host my domain?

I dont think there is any need to host the DNS yourself, and I dont think thats possible anyway as i think you would need a static IP for that.

Register a domain name with a company that lets you use their name servers and add a CNAME.
This cname will be your dynamic DNS account
A cname is a kind of alias for a hostname.

oh i forgot, if you donate to dyndns.org they will host your domain name for you on their name servers and it will be updatable just like a regular dyndns account.

I guess I am confused by domain name hosting. What I really meant was the ability to host my web server, email server etc, using my domain name.

I am currently exploring the dyndns.org option.

or you could just say take a gamble. How often does your "dynamic" IP really change? I've been on some form of "dynamic" high speed connection for years now, and I'd say it has been very rare that my IP has changed except in regards to changing of service (ie I moved 2000 miles away). Just leave your computer on and keep and eye on your external IP. I would wager it doesn't change.


also you can get much cheaper domain name registration at dotster.com, only $15/year.
