DNS doesn't seem to work with RR
 

I have installed suse linux onto my machine. I have a network of Windows machines connected to a router with DHCP going to the Roadrunner network. I have the machine up and running and the Samba is able to browse the windows machines just fine. I am also able to ping out to the internet and browse a website if I get the IP address. If I use a domain name the system just times out "most of the time". I don't know for some reason every once in a great while Mozilla will find the site I am looking for. Most of the time not. Everything is working for for the other machines. As far as I can tell things are setup pretty good on this end too but I have been chasing this around for 4 days and I am still not much closer in figuring out what could be wrong. Any ideas can help.

Are the DNS servers set exatly the same on the clients that are and are not working?

I have tried doing it both ways. The Windows boxes are just setup with DHCP resolving everything. I originaly to set up the linux box the same way. When that didn't work I configured it with a static IP and defined the gateway and DNS servers manualy. Roadrunner doesn't have their DNS servers posted so I tried using some others. That got me to a couple of sites (but not all) but after loading a few pages it stopped working again.

When the windows boxes are using DHCP run:
ipconfig /all
for win9x it is:
winipcfg

You should be shown the dns servers that you should use.

I had checked the Windoze machines and they were just pointing to the router/gateway. The linux machine originally was pointing to the same place when it wasn't working. I only changed it to try and force it to work.

As a fix, the version I was installing was Sun's Java Desktop version. I tried the SuSE Live Demo and it works fine. I am now trying to load the real version of SuSE and will see if that works.

I pretty sure it wasn't a bad install since I removed all of the partitions and tryied reinstalling from scratch. Several times. Same results every time. From the looks of it I think I am going to be happier with the "real" linux.
