DNS and pinging.... NOTHING WORKS!! HELP!

Ok, here's my problem. I have set up an Ubuntu 6.06 LAMP (Linux.Apache.MySQL.PHP) server, to use for hosting a web server and have connected it to the local network. However, the DNS server cannot see it, neither can other network computers, and it can only ping itself. The usual error is "host unreachable". If anyone has any suggestions on how I could fix this, please let me know. I have tried giving it a static IP for the internet, and assigning it a local one (10.XX.XX.XX), still with no luck. HELP!
