I have had no problem connecting to our LAN windows shares via LinNeighborhood. I am helping a friend this evening build a windows box, and he currently doesn’t have internet access. What I would like to do is directly connect my Linux laptop running RH9 to his windows machine with an Ethernet cable. . . can I do this with smb or will I have to go about this another way?
You will still need to have compatible IP settings, so yes you will need to set IP's on both ethernet cards in a compatible network (192.168.0.x/255.255.255.0). You won't however need to set a gateway or DNS servers unless you intend to connect to the internet.
Basically it's exactly the same as setting up a normal network, the PC's are just directly connected rather than using a hub or switch or router.
So if your gonna use Samba/MS File and Print Sharing, both of those services must be enabled on all machines.
Thanks, I used the internal IP 10.0.01/2 . . . . since it was a fresh install of windows out of the box, these services were already enabled. The only thing I had to set up on the windows box to allow me to be able to do this was change IP to an internal one, and set up work group with user name and password. Thanks Fataldata for your help
