Difference Between VPN and Tunneling

Can any one Explain me a clear difference between VPN and tunneling. I just know that both of these can transmit Private ip addresses on the internet. I even want to know what is the encapsulation they use. i want to know about some open source program to deploy those things on my redhat9 box.

VPN is generally implemented with the PPTP or IPSEC protocols. Under linux, you can use PoPToP and FreeS/WAN respectively for this. Tunneling is a broader name, but is commonly done over an SSH link under linux. SSH Tunneling is usually only done on a per-connection basis whereas VPN tunnels are often used for ALL communications from one computer. (In client/server VPN). Additionally, VPNs are often used to turn two physically disparate networks into a single virtual network.

Hope that helped some.

I hope you point out that this type of service is a dangerous threat to security. Any goof on a less than secure system may allow any number of threats past a firewall.

Exactly which TOS are you talking about? Tunneling in general or VPN more specifically or SSH or "Ultra Surf" that was mentioned?
Any type of security can always be mis-configured.
Being paranoid, I'd like to know what you have in mind

Actually I dont have to talk about VPN exactly, it's about tunneling in general , and mainly I need to focus on passing the websites filtering , which you know some Countries are using these kind of limitation in order to prevent of people accessing. So security of this is not so important in my speech.

Tunneling is basically the act of encapsulating one packet or frame into another packet or frame so that the inner packet gets transmitted transparently through a network for which it is not natively suited to travel. Otherwise it is done for convenience reasons, or to minimise routing config in a network.

So you might have two IPX networks at either end of an IP network. Rather than putting IPX routing on all the intermediate routers to allow the IPX islands to talk you can configure a GRE tunnel between the two IPX end routers and tunnel IPX packets into IP. The encapsulated IPX now looks like IP to the intervening network.

If you encrypt the contents of the tunnel you then have a secure pipe through which your private traffic can travel over a less private or public network. Thus Virtual Private Network.
