Dialup Problems.

Figured I would wait until my post on the Linux Newbie forum fell off the first page before reposting over here.

Here's the scoop:
I am using Redhat 9 with a Conexant HCF modem. (Bad combo, I know. ) I was able to successfully install the driver - the modem connects successfully to the ISP, I'm assigned an IP address, but I can't actually DO anything. Browsers can't resolve hostnames and I can't ping anything by IP address. I've ruled out the service - works fine under Windows XP. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to kick this thing into gear?

If it helps at all, I do have a NIC installed and connected to a router (which in turn is connected to nothing) and I can ping the router just fine.

Thanks!

Try running as root

/sbin/route add default ppp0

That will tell your kernel routing that ppp0 should be used if nothing else can.

Ok. I'm at work right now so I'll give that a shot when I get home in a couple of hours. There is an option in KPPP to make the modem connection the default route while it's connected, but apparently it doesn't work.

Thanks!

I have this in a file called /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/01ppp-up. That directory contains all the scripts I want run when my modem connection is brought up (mail fetchers, chrony, weather, etc.) I'm not sure if RH has the same thing though. Good luck.

Hey, it worked! I tossed that command into /etc/ppp/ip-up.local and that worked properly as well.

Thanks for the help!
