Dial-up connection RH8 - can't open any site, while connects ok
Hi,
To be able to connect to the internet under Linux, i bought a used External modem specially for that purpose - CIRRUS 56k external modem(Vintron WebExcel), although i had an internal modem (Motorola sm56) already working under Windows. Red Hat 8.0 'kudzu' detected my modem ok.
Now i can connect okay under Red Hat 8.0, but Konqueror browser (Mozilla based) doesn't open any site. After some delay (a minute or so) it gives the message - "Temporary failure in name resolution". It gives the same message if i try to open any site.
When i tried to connect to the Red Hat Network through the taskbar icon, it tries for some time, & thern gives me the message - "Fatal error - Temporary failure in name resolution".
I can connect okay through 'kppp', but the number of bytes recieved is much less than those sent (typically 2/3rds of number of bytes sent, like 35,000 recieved & 53,000 sent), while no such problem under Windows, so there should be no problem with the modem or connection.
I am quite new to this thing, & don't know where to start diagnosing. Please help.
Did you set up the account with 'Automatically resolve DNS?'. I have it enabled, and in a console, you should see something exactly similar. What you have simply sounds like a DNS problem. Can you put the following in the brower and connect
Easy...call your ISP and ask for the DNS server IP Addresses. You can then add them manually to the kppp page, or add them manually to
the file
/etc/resolv.conf
like the above example, but leave off the #<comment>
Usually, the automatically configure DNS works, but not in this case.
Well, I posted back as you were updating. I would call your ISP and verify that the DNS servers you listed are the correct ones. I should have mentioned, the file /etc/resolv.conf only have entries while kppp is running, when you disconnect, it deletes them for the next time it wants to 'Dynamically' resolve and store the IP addresses.
I today installed Red Hat 9.0 instead of Red Hat 8.0
Are you people aware of any peculiarities of RH9 with respect to kppp? I added a new modem to the fresh RH9 install in the 'network'. Then created a new connection. When i tried to dial-up, still the same story, this time with a new twist! This time, every site i try to open, doesn't open - says connection timed out while connecting to so & so. And as suggested by 'RO', i tried 'http://216.239.39.99/' in the browser (Konqueror), & even that didn't work - says the same, connection timed out.
AND HERE'S THE INTERESTING PART:
I disconnected the connection. I came away from the computer to put on my thinking cap. And you know what - i heard sounds from the modem - the modem was happily dialling away my connection. No notification or indication whatsoever! And a connection was established. And i was able to open the redhat site, google, yahoomail. And i had no way of disconnecting the connection, so i had to log off my user account. What in the name of hell was this? i was about 2 metres away fromthe computer when this all happened.
Will somebody please tell me waht is it:
1. Is it some bug or peculiarity of RH9?
2. Is it some virus - Linux Virus?
3. Is my computer haunted - God forbid!
You may have automatic reconnect selected. When you installed, what did you set your security level to. Try reconnecting, then SystemSettings-->SecurityLevel and try "None" and see if that helps. Also, recheck whether kppp added the correct DNS servers.
RO.
I feel for you...some people have 1, maybe 2, but not all problems.
