DHCP running?

In the process of installing LTSP on a box with Ubuntu 6.06 I realize that LSTP seems to be an appendage of DHCP. DHCP is installed, but I cannot find it in the running processes. To my chagrin, I cannot find where in the Ubuntu file structure to manually start DHCP. Please advise. Thanks.

You want to start a dhcp server?

There should be a start / stop /restart script in /etc/init.d/ called something like dhcp3-server

So to start it : sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server start

I'm running KDE, so the easy way to do all this stuff is through k -system Settings - System Services.

Gnome probably has something similar.

If you just want to get an IP from some other dhcp server then the command is:

sudo dhclient eth0

Obviously, you'll have to change eth0 to suit the interface you wish to use.

Debug / error log DHCPD?

Thanks, your instructions worked, but the start failed. I assume this is because of errors in my configuration Is there a log file for what problems caused a failed start? Thanks again.

You are right (I just tried it):

Code:
# /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server start
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Server V3.0.3
Copyright 2004-2005 Internet Systems Consortium.
All rights reserved.
For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/sw/dhcp/
 * Starting DHCP server:                                                                          [fail]
A bit of googling says that this is because the file dhcpd.leases file does not exist.

These two articles should help you
