I tried to edit this file by replacing 127.0.0.1 with 24.217.0.4, but it would not let me.

Were you root when you tried this?

Problem began when I connected to a cable modem using an ethernet card.

Did you ever have anything else plugged into this cable modem? A lot (all, I think) cable companies restrict the use of your cable modem to the first MAC address it gets (the cable modem that is). So if you had a different NIC plugged into the cable modem, then switch NICs, you'd have to call the cable company and tell them the MAC address of the new NIC. This is why most broadband routers have MAC address cloning.
What does
ifconfig show?
