DHCP - Get new IP

Right now my computer is connected to the internet through a LAN. On occasion, I hook it up directly to my modem. The problem here is, if i just pull the cable out of the switch and stick it in the modem, the computer will still have the LAN IP (192.168.0.64 or something like it). Is there a command I can use to have the computer "refresh" its IP address to get one that isn't a "local" IP?

I'm not sure if the same applies in Slackware but on my Redhat box, I can switch the cables and issue the commands:
service network stop
service network start
