DHCP assign only to certain MAC addresses

Hello and thanks for taking the time to read my note.

I am needing a bit of guidance and I am looking for a starting point.

I am working on a DHCP server for our office in which we have outgrown our static IP address pool. I am needing to setup a DHCP server and I would like to filter who can receive a address by MAC address.

I have been able to successfully setup a DHCP server using Ubuntu and have verified that it is assigning the correct addresses. What I would like to do now is restrict who is provided an address via MAC address.

Would someone be able to point me in a direction of where to look? I have seen several instances on this forum which use IPTABLES, but that seems more like they are using their system as a router or gateway.

I would appreciate any advice -

Mike

You should be able to do the mac matching in the DHCP server itself by using a subclass. Take a look at the dhcpd.conf manpage, in the subclass section it describes how to use the mac (hardware ethernet) allocation class followed by a list of the mac addresses in that class. Then just get rid of the open dhcp part and it should do what you want.

Estabroo -

Thanks for the advice!

I will be in that office either tomorrow or Monday morning. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Thanks again!

Mike
