DHCP and eth1:9

I may not have all the necessary things compiled into my kernel for DHCP. When I try to restart my network with DHCP, it takes forever for it to assign an IP to my eth0 and eth1 cards (I tried each separatly). When it finally does complete the task of determining an IP and I run ifconfig, there are no IP addresses under eth1 or eth0. However, there is a listing just under the eth1 or eth0 listed as eth1:9 which does have the IP information. Why can't my eth1 get an IP instead of eth1:9 and what is that anyway?
