dhclient causes programs not to start

I've been using dhclient to get an ip for my wireless. However when I run it I've had problems of programs not running either through the gnome menu or by typing the command in a terminal.

The error I get right after running dhclient is:

Failed to open connection to session message bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-jONa60o0DE: Connection refused

Not sure if this is even related or not.

The error I get when trying to start any program after running dhclient:

Gdk-CRITICAL **: file ../../../gdk/x11/gdkdisplay-x11.c: line 360 (gdk_display_get_name): assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed

** (gaim:5485): WARNING **: cannot open display: unset

This error came from trying to start gaim but I get the same message for other programs like firefox, thunderbird, ooffice, etc... Ironically, Nautilus doesn't have a problem starting, so I'm not sure why that is. I've seen other people have the same problem but no solutions or explanations.

Any Ideas?
