Detecting connection speed


I have some scripts fot chat & ppp to connect to the WinNT RAS using callback (CBCP) so how could I know what it callback connection speed?

It is not all I want. Every time I have connected I want to know current speed of my modem (e.g. bytes or bit per second)

How about iptraf? I use it to monitor file transfers. Seems to work good.
