depression follows failed PCMCIA setup on laptop

Hello
I hope that everybody is well.
I am trying to set up my HP Omnibook XE3 using SuSE 8.0...all has gone well so far but for one thing - the PCMCIA network card will not work. My definition of *not work* is
*I can't get onto the network*.

The card was being recognised at boot by (...and now I step into a strange world that I don't understand  yet)...PCMCIA. The card beeped and lit up.

Any attempt to use it or ping was met with "network is unreachable"....

I've followed various threads on this site but I am stuck. The card works in (whisper) XP, which I ambitiously removed from the laptop.

Please point me in the right direction. I am sure that this is a common problem but, due to my lack of knowledge, I can't put the right search terms in to find an answer.

Thanks a million.

I'm a n00b , and can't tell anything bout SuSe, but I managed to get my Omni XE3l to connect to net with Gentoo..so I am pretty sure that you'll manage to do it too..Maybe a little bit more info about your setup(ethernet, adsl, dhcp etc..?) might help to get answers from those that know better..Don't give up, I too installed over working XP and couldn't connect at first..My best guess is that it's just some configuration thingie..

It seems that the card is the problem. I tried a different card and (sound of trumpets and drum roll) my laptop was on the network!! SuSE was not at fault.. It seems as though my Unex MD010C isn't Linux friendly out of the box. I tried two of them! I looked on the Unex site and they make suggestions for Linux users - which I followed but that messed everything up!! Yipee! Back to the beginning

If you get your system up and running, I'd be happy to look at your xf86 config file, as to improve mine.. send a pm, or just post here, please.. thankx
