deny this fruitcake access

howdy. I have a person or persons probing my server from a certain IP addy. I'd like to stop the server to responding to any requests from this specific IP. I've monkeyed around with hosts.deny with several syntaxes, like:

ALL:xx.xx.xx.xx and
xx.xx.xx.xx :ALL DENY

etc, etc...can someone help me out here? None of the above has worked, am I on the right track? Am I editing the right file? I'd like to not return pings, accept ftp connections, etc from this specific IP addy, but I can't lock down the whole machine since I do have legitimate users connecting from all over the world.

thanks in advance,
hux

well, you want a firewall, with iptables. that person's gonna get bored, and won't come back (unless you've got a wide open system) so i'd recommend you got a firewall going, just for piece of mind. it's nothgin scary at all, esp using a gui like firestarter ( a gnome app) to configure it. also using firestarter you can instantly block certain ips as you wish.

sounds good, I appreciate it...I didn't realize there was a security specific area of the board...preciate the non-flaming :)
