Default route is set as 192.168.1.2 on DSL connection and have to delete it everytime

I have a DSL connection which I use pon / poff to connect to (Debian 6.0). Now, every time I connect, the default route is set as 192.168.1.2 eth0 and I have to manually delete it before I do pon. Also, the default nameserver in /etc/resolve.conf is also set as 192.168.1.2 and I have to put in 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google public DNS) every single time.

What am I missing configuration-wise so that I only have to start the connection and surf? Also, pppoe-start doesn't seem to work, even though I configured the connection using pppoe-setup.

So your modem doesn't set up a connection?
Do I understand correctly that the default gateway and DNS configuration are set before you run pon, after you boot the computer?
