Debian net install/failed eth0

I have a box already running slackware 10.0 and I am attempting to add Debian to a second hard drive that have. Slackware is on a 40gig and Debian is on a 10 gig (hda and hdb respectively). When I do the net install of Debian the first stage where it loads the base install works fine. When I restart I notice that it has a problem finding modules (it's looking in /lib/modules/2.4.26 when they are actually in /lib/modules/2.4.27-86) but it continues to boot up. Before I see the configuration screen that is automatically loaded I noticed that there is a message saying "failed to load eth0". Sure enough when I try to finish the installation using net sources it can't connect to them. Everything still works fine in slackware. Any ideas about what might be going on? Thanks in advance.
