ddclient is a perl script and ddclient.conf is the configuration file it uses. I run mine every 300 seconds, I don't recommend you only run yours daily.

There's more info on the ddclient usage page

## Configuration variables applicable to the 'freedns' protocol are:
# protocol=freedns ##
# server=fqdn.of.service ## defaults to freedns.afraid.org
# login=service-login ## login name and password registered with the service
# password=service-password ##
# fully.qualified.host ## the host registered with the service.
#
# Example ${program}.conf file entries:
## single host update
protocol=freedns, \
login=my-freedns.afraid.org-login, \
password=my-freedns.afraid.org-password \
myhost.afraid.org

----------------------------

What version of ddclient are you using? According to the gentoo wiki you need to use at least 3.8.0 to use freedns as the protocol.

I think I saw somewhere that you use \ to continue onto the next line.

Meaning your ddclient.conf reads:

protocol=freedns, login=my-freedns.afraid.org-login, passwor...

when it should read something like:

protocol=freedns
login=my-freedns.afraid.org-login
password=my-freedns.afraid.org-password
myhost.afraid.org

That being said, I still haven't found any solid documentation on using ddclient with freedns.afraid.org and mine isn't working yet, but I think this is at least part of your problem.

ddclient protocol for FREEDNS

latest ddcleint -11 was installed and configured. Config file calls for protocol=freedns however it does not recognizes the freedns protocol and error is released. Have you guys figured out the answer?
