Question dancing samba in network with knoppix ?

hello!

i am trying 100s of things to get some data from an old pc with win98 to a new one with ubuntu.
neither ms network/samba connection or an external usb hdd were of any help.

now i am considering downloading knoppix, running it on the old pc and making a folder available for the new pc via samba.
1- is that a possibility?
2- will i be able to access my local drive (formatted for win98) with knoppix to move files?
3- will i be able to set up a shared folder with knoppix/samba that i could access from the other pc?

thanks in advance for the answer...
fred

Yup. Done this many times. http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/ Never was able to get linneighborhood to work, but the command line stuff all worked fine and the folder was available to the network.

Alternatively, most days it's just as easy to take the drive out of the computer and plug it into the new one as a slave. Then mount it and move all the files you want. For laptops you need a converter because the IDE cables are different. And of course you need a two plug ribbon cable for your drives or an empty IDE channel. Never done SATA yet...

thanx a lot pljvaldez....

... but it did unfortunately not work. the problem seems to be in my network configuration. can you tell me which configuration i have to choose to be able to access one pc from the other? or point me to such a great step by step tutorial?

i basically am in a small network. one fritz box connected to adsl and one switch where both computers are plugged in.
i don't know where i have to look first to find the reason of the problem (i think it'll be better after 35 years of using linux :-)).

thanx again.
