Corel Linux
Hey there i got an old computer from the 2001 years and i got my package unopened of Corel Linux so i installed linux on it but the netwrok card from the motherbard works said eth0 in the setting but when i try to go to a website its said website not found
what can i do |
you can take the corel disk, snap it in half and get something else less ancient. Past that you need to provide useful information about your system. you can't jump directly to a web browser not working. you should be providing the output of the "ifconfig" as a starting point, but i'd be sure that a new distro would make it work out of the box as detection and automatic configuration has improved immensely since then.

Yeah i will try ifconfig thing for the spec of the computer is not where i' i currently and the browser is netscape (and i hate netscape) anyway i will send out the info over there when i will get it.
And i wonder if Debian can be installed on this machine |

2001 years ... should go with some flavour of Vector Linux or Xubuntu.
The exact specs will help |
Corel Linux is now owned by Xandros and it is a commercial distribution. Don't expect support for its predecessor which ended in 2001. You can check with Xandors, but don't hold your breath.
By why bother as Linux is free. You can download and install any distro that will work on your hardware. Due to its age, you may find this to be the determining factor in what you decide to do. As previously stated, post specs for help. |
Ok i executed ifconfig and i see lo but not eth0 so how do i set up eth0 i dont quite the command i used the last time...
Here the specs : Processor : Celeron 500Mhz Ram : 64MB 100Mhz Video : around 8 to 16Mb (cannot be sure) Hard drive : 10GB Maxtor |
a celeron 500 will still run most distro's, as long as you hack back the bells and whistles. I'd really suggest not bothering to try to fix things under corel. if you're hoping to learn linux, then you're just going to hit brick wall after brick wall in terms of application compatability, functionality, support etc...

ok what i can install on that kind of machine?
|
if you want it, the latest version of debian will run fine. what won't run is a fancy pants desktop environment like KDE 4. that'll be the thing that kills it. if you run xfce or something instead it should be fine.
|
Hummm 21 CD to install debian? god lord and what happen if the net install wont detect the network card?
|
Download just about any modern Live-CD distro and try it in the computer. If everything works OK then install it to the hard drive.

Yeah i know but memory don't grow in the trees and now they are very expensive and i don't want to spend anymore on that computer.
|
who said you needed to? just don't run memory intensive stuff in the first place.
