copy hardrive from one machine to another via network with permissions?

Hello all,

I am rebuilding my server on a new machine but cannot move the hard drive from the old machine to the new machine. Therefore I would like to copy my old hard drive data (/home) to my new machine via my network. I need to preserve the owner and file permissions. I tried Samba but it reset both the owner and permissions. I assume ftp would do the same....

Any ideas?

You can use tar and gzip to produce a tar.gz file. It'll keep owners and permissions. The only problem is the space needed to compress your /home, but I hope you can do this.
