Lightbulb connection sharing works, but....

Hey guys chew on this one
I have a mandrake 8 box setup with cable connection into nic another nic out to a hub a line from the hub going upstairs through the wall to a machine running win 98 (my wifes computer).
I set up connection sharing and it seems to work fine in the aspect of surfing the net, but, when attempting to play an online game, such as Vampire the Masquerade, on the win 98 machine it connects to the game server but for some reason wont join any games or allow others to join a hosted game.
also is it possible to recieve e-mail on the served machine with a browser based mail client?
I am thinking the problem has something to do with linux firewalling the connections out, but I have yet to set up any firewall that I am aware of.
would appriciate any type of response
